From and including May 1997 the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) for B4184S and B4204S is withdrawn.
The pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) function is to reduce hydrocarbon– and carbon dioxide emission when starting from cold by warming up the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) more quickly. By supplying fresh air to the exhaust ports when starting from cold, the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) begins reburning the hydro-carbons. This makes it possible to reduce ignition, increase exhaust temperature and to activate the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) more quickly.
The system consists of:
-Engine control module (ECM) (1) which controls both the relay and the solenoid valve (3.5).
-Pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump (2), activated by the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump relay (3). A filter prevents dirt and water from being drawn in to the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump. A 120 A fuse in the integrated relay/fusebox in the engine compartment protects the pump and relay. A replaceable bimetal fuse in the pump protects it from overheating, which may otherwise occur with repeated cold starting.
-Shut-off valve (4) which regulates the air supply to the exhaust ports.
-A solenoid (5) which controls the shut-off valve using the negative pressure in the intake manifold.
-Check valve (6) which prevents exhaust gases escaping when the system is not operating.
The engine control module (ECM) controls the relay for the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump and the solenoid valve which starts the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump and opens the shut-off valve when the system begins to operate. Air from the pump is routed from the pump via the shut-off valve and
valve to the exhaust ports.
If the engine coolant temperature (ECT) is between−11 °C and +35 °C, the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) is activated immediately after the engine is started. Once the system has been activated, it operates for 136 seconds.
When the pump is operating, the signal from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is not used.
